Low frame rate in DFK 31BF03

I have two DFK 31BF03 cameras, and am only getting 3.75fps in UYVY, and 7.5fps in BY8 with them. The current machine they are on is a Pentium 4 3.2GHz with 2GB of RAM, and when I test either of them, they are the only devices on the firewire bus. I've also tried them on two other machines with exactly the same results. When I launch IC Capture 2.1, I get this error:

Error: Live mode could not be started. Please make sure no other program uses the device and that there is enough bandwidth on your firewire bus available.

If I set the frame rate low enough, I do not get that error. I've installed the latest drivers from the web site, but get the same results. Is there anything else I could be checking to fix the problem?

I should also say that, using coriander on Linux, I was able to get 30fps, but only in monochrome. I don't have the option for monochrome in IC Capture 2.1.

    Hello,

may be you have the 1394b issue of Windows XP:

The Performance of 1394 devices may decrease after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

    Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222

After you update your computer to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the performance of your 1394a or 1394b FireWire devices may be greatly decreased. A digital camera that uses S400 speed is an example of such a device. This problem occurs if you connect a 1394a or 1394b FireWire device to a 1394b port. This problem occurs because Windows XP SP2 changes 1394b ports to S100 speed when you upgrade.

This hotfix is not implemented in SP3 too.
    Best regards

I have tried installing the hotfix, but it does not help; perhaps I'll see if we can get a newer version of Windows on that machine.

I was, however, having the same trouble on Linux. Is there a similar issue with Linux?

Re: Low frame rate in DFK 31BF03

    Hello,

the monochrome option in IC Capture is Y800. Also BY8 has, like Y800 only 1 byte per pixel. Thus these formats should have 30 fps. The UYVY video foramt needs two bytes per pixel, thus the maximum frame rate is only 15 fps.
