Laptop sees DFK31BU03 but not DFK31AU03

Using a Dell Vostro laptop I can use any DFK 31BU03 (1024x768 CCD with trigger) just fine. But whenever I plug in a DFK 31AU03 (same camera minus the trigger) the laptop just refuses to see it. It detects the camera (XP goes bdoink!) but will not recognize (mount?) it. (It immediately drops it with a second bdoink sound.)

It's not a matter of enough power. I injected power on the USB externally, no joy. Short cable, no joy. The cameras without the trigger do not work, the cameras with trigger do.

How come?
