Are grey level Pictures limited to 8 Bit (255 greylevels)?

Yes, if your hardware offers a so-called WDM or DirectX-driver. WDM drivers are available for FireWire and USB-cameras as well as for a lot of Framegrabbers.

You can access the camera properties through the drivers dialog, our API or directly by utilizing the DirectX API.

Yes, grey level images are limited to 8 Bit.
